Bale, the beginning of a bumpy ride

The physical therapists and medical team at Real Madrid will have to pamper Gareth Bale as much as possible in order to prevent Florentino Pérez's latest signing from becoming one of the worst investments in the club's entire history. The €100 million splashed out on Bale is very much a burden for the club president, the player and those responsible for looking after him.
Bale's start to his Real Madrid career has not been as rosy as everyone might have expected after his transfer to the club was sealed. The forward made his debut against Villarreal without undergoing pre-season training and then played 20 minutes against Galatasaray in the Champions League. But his nightmare began on 22nd September when he made his debut at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Ten minutes before the match against Getafe started, the Welshman had to withdraw from the warm-updue to a thigh injury which forced him to delay his much-awaited home debut. This was the first of many physical problems he has endured at the club.
After resting for one week, Bale played for 45 minutes in the Madrid derby, but once again succumbed to injury and subsequently missed the following games against Copenhagen and Levante. The club then decided to rest the player after 132 minutes of action (106 in La Liga and 26 in the Champions League) and one goal.
Bale had not performed pre-season training and the coaching staff realised the player - with a spectacular, but not invulnerable level of fitness - had been forced excessively.
