Willy prevents rout as improved Real Madrid beat Málaga
Real Madrid kept in touch with La Liga pacesetters Barcelona and Atlético Madrid with a 2-0 win over Málaga at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Carlo Ancelotti handed Álvaro Morata a start in place of the injured Karim Benzema, and the youngster saw a first-half goal ruled out for offside before being denied by a great save from Málaga goalkeeper Willy Caballero.
After a goalless first half, Argentina international Ángel di María opened the scoring as his cross-cum-shot eluded the head of Cristiano Ronaldo and crept past Caballero at the far post.
Cristiano and Jesé then had chances to extend the home side’s lead, but came up against an in-form Caballero in the visitors’ goal.
‘Los Blancos’ sealed the three points when Weligton was harshly adjudged to have brought down substitute Gareth Bale, and Cristiano scored from the spot.
