Varane works alone and undergoes medical examination

Raphael Varane returned to Valdebebas yesterday and was examined by the Real Madrid doctors who are closely monitoring the progress of his knee. The French player worked in the indoor facilities of the club's training complex and did not join the rest of his teammates out on the pitch.

Varane followed the same treatment routine with France that he does with Real Madrid, meaning no forceful or excessive training sessions. Moreover, the central defender missed several working sessions with Deschamps' French squad and didn't play in Tuesday's game against Finland.

He is being wrapped in cotton wool in order to avoid a relapse of the injury. He still has discomfort after tough workouts and therefore still hasn't joined in with the normal pace of Ancelotti's training sessions. Madrid wanted to check his condition first upon return from the international break.

Dani Carvajal also came back injured but he trained normally. The right back returned from under 21 duty with a twisted ankle, but yesterday he worked at the same rate as his team mates and his injury has therefore been dismissed.

Gareth Bale also trained with the group while Modric and Sergio Ramos did indoor exercises at the training complex. Xabi Alonso is still unable to join in with the group sessions and trained alone on the Valdebebas pitch.
