When Bernd Schuster talks about leaving one major club for another, he speaks from experience, having played for Spain's three big boys. The German's message to Iker Casillas, therefore, was no surprise: "There's more to life than Real Madrid".
Speaking at a press conference, Schuster claimed that Casillas "is being very level-headed about it all". "It's the toughest thing that can happen to a player who has won everything. But football never leaves you out in the lurch; there's always a solution. Iker is at an age at which he can still move on and play for a big club", he continued.
When repeatedly quizzed on whether he was encouraging Casillas to seek pastures new, Schuster didn't bite his tongue: "Of course, that's what I said. There are other places, there are other top clubs he can play for; where there's a will, there's a way. I understand it's a wrench because it's his lifelong club, but when one door closes in football, another one opens - just look at Raúl or Valdés. That's football for you: there is a place for everyone".
