Choosing a ref for 'El Clasico'

Even though Sánchez Arminio, López Nieto and Puentes Leira – the three members of the selection committee – chose him on Tuesday, the name of the referee who will take charge of the Barça-Madrid game will be made public today. In order to be eligible, referees must meet the following conditions:

1/ He must be one of Spain’s nine international referees, although this is an unwritten rule which is only broken in exceptional circumstances, like last year when Pérez Lasa took charge of the 'Clasico' at the Bernabeu because he was retiring at the end of the season.

2/ He cannot be from Madrid or Catalonia. This cuts three of the nine candidates from the list: Estrada Fernández and Madrid-born Del Cerro Grande and Velasco Carballo. That leaves six.

3/ He must not yet have refereed Barça at home or Madrid away during this first half of the season. This rule excludes two who have taken charge of Barça at home (Teixeira and Muñiz) or Real Madrid away (Muñiz). That leaves four.

4/ He must not have refereed either of the teams during the past month. This rule excludes Mateu from the 'Clasico', as he took charge of the Real vs Atleti derby less than a month ago. That leaves three.

At the end of the process, Fernández Borbalán, Clos Gómez and Undiano Mallenco are the only legitimate candidates. For matches like the 'Clasico', the match referee is usually given the chance to assign a fourth official of his choosing (normally from his own territorial committee) given the difficulty of refereeing this type of match.
