Luka Modric

Luka Modric is the cornerstone of the Croatia national team. This was backed up by the visit of the country's new coach and former player Niko Kovac – named as manager on Wednesday - to Madrid. The replacement for Stimac took barely three days to travel to Spain to get a first-hand idea of the Real midfielder's views ahead of Croatia's playoff match against Iceland.

Modric received both Niko and his brother Robert - who will be assistant coach - in Madrid. Both were present at the draw for the playoffs in Zurich, meaning that the visit was a quick one, but also positive to boost morale in the Croatia camp. Croatia is somewhat deflated after losing at home to Belgium, who qualified directly for Brazil, and Scotland. They exchanged opinions on the future of the national team and also spoke about Real Madrid.

Modric made it into the full national side when Kovac was captain. The former Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich player took Modric under his wing in the first matches and they have had a good relationship ever since.

Kovac needs Modric's guidance to lift the national side presided by former Real Madrid player Davor Suker.

Modric's rise inside the Croatia team has gone hand-in-hand with his achievements at Real Madrid. The midfielder has been an essential player for Ancelotti since the Italian arrived at the club.
