Raphael Varane and Paul Pogba

Raphael Varane and Paul Pogba have a lot in common. To begin with they have been friends since the days they played together at different youth levels of the French national team. Another member of the same group is former Sevilla player Geoffery Kondogbia, now at Mónaco, and one more of the new stars in the current French set-up.

The coincidences between Rapahel and Paul, who will face each other in the Champions League on Wednesday when Real Madrid meets Juventus, do not end there. Both were born in 1993 and having only just turned 20 both are full internationals with France at the same time as being key in their club sides.

In fact, both made their debut for 'les bleus' on the same day earlier this year in the 3-1 win over Georgia on 22nd March at the Stade de France. That game was supposed to whet the appetite before their baptism of fire three days later when they played against Spain in a World Cup qualifier that the Spanish won 1-0 thanks to a Pedro goal, while Pogba received his marching orders.
The injury Varane suffered at Cornellà at the end of last season put an end to the summer they were set to spend together in the Under 20 squad in Turkey and the Real Madrid defender could only watch on as his colleagues became World Champions in Istambul.
Now they will meet for the first time in the professional game; the last time they played against each other was five seasons ago in the under 16 Championship, when Varane's Lens beat Pogba's Le Havre side.

Now at Juventus, Pogba signed for Manchester United in 2009, before ending up in Italy, spending three seasons at Old Trafford, before a free transfer took him to Turin.
Varane left Lens two years ago and now finally their paths will cross in the Bernabeu on Wednesday.
