Ticking the ten boxes

A rejuvenated Real Madrid prepares its assault on the Champions League. Carlo Ancelotti's side put on perhaps its best display of the season against Málaga.

1. Good play from start to finish

Speedy breaks out of defence, crosses from the flanks and a lot of shots.

2. Pressure high up the pitch to prevent Málaga from playing out

The team achieved this, except in the opening minutes, to prevent Málaga from playing on the counter-attack.

3. The combination of intensity and balance

The team attacked and defended as a unit.

4. Attack bolstered by offensive full-backs

Crosses from Carvajal caused problems, while Marcelo always troubled the Málaga defence.

5. A defender placed further forward guarantees ball-recovery

Ramos and Pepe played further forward and closed up spaces.

6. Diego López finally achieved a clean-sheet at home

He only made one save - in the 2nd minute from Gámez.

7. Real did not commit a foul until the 59th minute

The team did not need to foul in order to foil Málaga, with just four fouls awarded against the home side.

8. The substitutions paid off and Bale was given playing-time

Modric came on for Isco. Bale enjoyed a spell on the pitch. Jesé played for 10 minutes at a high level of performance.

9. Ronaldo missed a sitter, but ended up scoring

He still managed to get on the score-sheet, albeit from the penalty-spot.

10. The fans left their personal grudges at home

The atmosphere in the stadium was one of the most electric so far this season, with the supporters always getting behind their team.
